Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a workshop manual or an owner's manual?

It is the factory Instruction Manual, which is the book MG issued with the car. MG did not publish a separate workshop manual for the M-Type. The Instruction Manual carries the maintenance and adjustment procedures an owner or garage needed, including valve, camshaft, rocker, cylinder head, bearing, clutch, steering, shock absorber and brake work, but not full engine overhaul in the modern workshop manual sense.

What exactly does it cover?

Six sections: General Driving and Maintenance, Lubrication, Adjustments, The Carburetter, Coil Ignition Equipment, and Electric Lighting and Starting System, followed by the illustrated spare parts list with period prices.

Which car does it apply to?

The M-Type Midget, MG's first Midget, built from 1929 to 1932 with the 847 cc overhead camshaft engine derived from the Morris Minor unit. This copy is the 1931 printing from The M.G. Car Company, Abingdon-on-Thames.

Does it include the spare parts list?

Yes. The parts list runs at the back of the book with part descriptions, quantity per car and the original list prices, which makes it useful for identifying correct components during a restoration.

Are there wiring diagrams?

The Electric Lighting and Starting System section covers the dynamo, brushes, commutator, fuse, field, switch and warning lamp, along with fault detection and remedies. It is period electrical documentation rather than a modern wiring diagram set.

Is the PDF searchable?

Yes. The original is a scan of the printed 1931 book and a text layer has been added, so you can search and print. As with any scan of a ninety year old publication, occasional words are imperfect.

Why is this cheaper than the other manuals?

Because it is an instruction manual with adjustments rather than a full workshop manual, and we price it accordingly. For deeper M-Type repair work, the 1929-1955 MG workshop manual by W. E. Blower is the reference most owners use alongside it.
