What do Mercedes chassis codes like W205 or W212 mean?

Mercedes identifies each model generation by a chassis (or model series) code. The letter usually reflects the body style — W for saloon, S for estate, C for coupé, A for cabriolet and X for many SUVs — and the number identifies the generation. For example, the C-Class runs W202 → W203 → W204 → W205 → W206, the E-Class runs W210 → W211 → W212 → W213, and the GLE is the W166 then W167.
